Winter Storm Tips
As you probably know by now, a snow blizzard is coming to Northwest Indiana region this late afternoon that has potentially life threatening conditions that will take place. There is the potential for power outages and down trees so we advise that you turn off as much computer and computerized appliances as possible in case of a power outage potentially damaging your equipment.
If you have a permanent automatic standby generator that has been properly maintained, and which has ran its weekly exercise in the most recent weeks, you should be protected from an outage; however, you should verify that your electric panel surge protectors and point of use surge protection devices are in proper working order.
If you have a backup power system, such as a portable generator, to keep your electric running, then please test the generator to make sure it is working properly before relying on it. Again, we highly recommend 2-stage surge protection for your electrical appliances and computers.
If you only have a battery backup system, it will NOT be reliable as most battery backups will only provide backup power between 5-20 minutes.
We also advise to follow the warning and preparation recommendations by the National Weather Service listed for the following areas:
Indiana - Lake and Porter County: http://ping.fm/mvHPD
